Magical mountains – moving landscapes
Ausseerland
“I had turned my mind to the mountains,” writes Archduke Johann in his diary, “I personally don't want to explain the how and why.” Well we already know: its because in the Aussee mountains one can really breathe deeply, feel free and be as far removed from the daily grind as possible, shrouded in the snow.
And if you hadn’t already, you’ll feel at last it when snow on the mountains glistens and ice shines on the lakes: the cool air calms your temper and stills your mind, troubles falls away and your spirits take flight. Yes, Aussee in winter is still the most beautiful place.
Active at winterly Ausseerland - an overview:
Above and in the middle - on the ski slopes in Aussee
Loser
Modern 6-seater chairlifts take you to the Loser ski resort, and anyone in need of a break can stop by Heli at the Loser lodge, whose cream cakes and sun terrace with view of the Dachstein massif make it a great place to take a breather.
Tauplitz
With sunny slopes and wide pistes, skiing here is fun for the whole family.
There’s certainly enough of it in Aussee...
Snow, the white stuff for those who love winter sports. At the ski resort on the Loser, about 10 minutes' drive from the Hotel Erzherzog Johann, there is something for everyone:
- Family-friendly slopes
- Sporting descents
- An abundance of deep powder snow and great panoramas for tourers
- Jumps, wave-rail and kicker combo for freeriders and boarders

Or something a tad more serene?
The cross-country ski runs around the Blaa-Alm (about 10 minutes by car from Hotel Erzherzog Johann) wind down a sunny valley with an incredible view of the Aussee mountains, where you can also hike with snowshoes. You can also go ice skating or curling amidst this winter splendour (for example, at Lake Altaussee).
And if you’d prefer to cosy up, then sit back and relax: you can marvel at the sparkling ice crystals on the mountains and lakes from the comfort of a horse-drawn carriage or sleigh.
The best place to relax:
